Description
This frog sits on a knot of parasite wood. The tiny chaquira, or seed beads, are applied by coating the surface of the ceramic form with a beeswax mixture called campeche. The beads are then applied one by one using a needle. The vision of the Huichol artist comes to life as the beads are applied. The beading is perfect with every bead in place. This can easily be seen by clicking on the photo where it will expand, showing the incredible detail of this art. Because smaller size 15 beads are used instead of the more available larger size 11, greater skill and artistry is required. The quality of the beading is unsurpassed!
To the Huichol, the frog protects the springs from which water comes. The frog is covered with many beautiful peyote symbols, three large ones on its back and one under the chin. Also, there are small peyote all over its body that are created with just seven beads. Gold plated beads accent the frog. The peyote represents success in life and connection with the spirit world. It is 4″ front to back, 4″ wide and 2 1/2″ tall.
Seen in real life this frog comes to life and is imbued with the Huichol connection to the spirit world.
