The turtle is a very traditional animal for the Huichol Indians. The turtle assists the rain goddess and protects the purity of all water. It is also responsible for the replenishing of underground springs.
This turtle displays red and gold peyote symbols. The peyote, called ‘jicuri’, is used in ceremonies as sacred medicine, allowing connection with the spirit world, deities and ancestors. It is 2.5″ wide, 3″ long and an inch deep. Even the wooden carving itself is a work of art. Seen in real life this turtle is imbued with the Huichol connection to the spirit world.
