Description
This hummingbird is striking in shades of red with symbols circular peyote, ceremonial candle and deer heads. Gold and iridescent blue green beads are used to beautifully accent the hummingbird. The tiny chaquira, or seed beads, are applied by coating the surface of the wooden carving with a beeswax mixture called campeche. The beads are then applied one by one using a needle. The vision of the artist comes to life as the beads are applied. The beading is perfect with every bead in place. This can easily be seen by clicking on each image where it will expand, showing the incredible detail of this art. Because smaller size 15 seed beads – called ‘micro beads’ – are used instead of the more usual larger size 11 – the level of skill and artistry is unsurpassed. The wooden carving is also beautiful.
The sacred symbols in this piece are peyote, which allows communication with deities and ancestors; a ceremonial candle that the shamans use in ceremonies; deer heads which represent Kauyumari, who leads the shamans on their visionary pathways and teaches them how to gain their special knowledge. The scopion symbol is on the tail and represents a protector of the peyote. Seen in real life this hummingbird comes to life and is imbued with the Huichol connection to the spirit world.
The hummingbird is 4 1/4 inches in tall, 2 inches wide and 4 1/4 inches front to back.
